On Saturday night we went and saw They Might Be Giants. The first cool thing was walking up to their merchandise table and finding out that they had signed every copy of their latest album. How cool is that!?!
$65 later we left the merch table, found our seats, and were ready for the opening band to hurry up and get their act over with so we could see TMBG quicker.
All we really knew about Oppenheimer was that they were an electronica (electric nachos) band from Ireland. So when they came out on the stage everyone politely clapped for them, except for maybe two people who cheered.
They started off with "My son, the astronaut" which to everyone's surprise was really good. The next song was titled "Let's take this outside" which featured an airhorn solo....this completely won over everyone in the crowd. Another quick trip to the merch table and $15 later I had their cd. They finished their set with "Saturday looks bad to me" which was another great song. During the intermission most of the audience went and bought their cd.
After what seemed like an eternity, the stage was set up for TMBG. The crowd was very small. I wondered if a few of the people there had intended to come or just won the tickets from a radio station. There was an elderly lady next to us who seemed rather confused about what was going to take place that night. Maybe she had meant to be at the "extreme wrestling" event at the BOA center. I noticed she had just dozed off by the time the lights dimmed and the show started.
Given the fact that no one got up from their seats for Oppenheimer, I wondered if the crowd would remain seated the whole time. A friend of ours who had been to previous TMBG concerts reassured me that whoever remained seated would be mocked by the band. I felt a little better.
Finally the show started with the John's running out and performing "The Cap'm". Everyone was excited, but still seated. Thankfully John Flansburgh told everyone to leave their comfy chairs and come forward. He said the next song was personal to him because it was about where he was from. I was so excited because I knew that meant the next song was going to be "Everyone's your friend in NYC"
Once we had bought our tickets I thought "If they just play Everyone's your friend in NYC I will be a happy woman". The song is special to my husband and me. It reminds us of the old days when we were a good three days drive away from each other and how exciting it was when we got to be with each other and just love life. The song goes...
" You called me last night on the telephone
And I was glad to hear from you 'cause I was all alone
You said, "It's snowing, it's snowing! God, I hate this weather."
Now I walk through blizzards just to get us back together
We met in the springtime at a rock-and-roll show
It was on the Bowery when it was time to go
We kissed on the subway in the middle of the night
I held your hand, you held mine, it was the best night of my life.
'Cause everyone's your friend in New York City
And everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
The streets are paved with diamonds and there's just so much to see
But the best thing about New York City is you and me
Statue of Liberty, Staten Island Ferry, Co-op City, Katz's and Tiffany's*
Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, The Empire State where Dylan lived
Coney Island and Times Square, Rockefeller Center
Wish I was there
You wrote me a letter just the other day
Said, "Springtime is coming soon so why don't you come to stay."
I packed my stuff, got on the bus, I can't believe it's true
I'm three days from New York City and I'm three days from you
'Cause everyone's my friend in New York City
And everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
The streets are paved with diamonds and there's just so much to see
But the best thing about New York City is you and me
'Cause everyone's my friend in New York City
And everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
The streets are paved with diamonds and there's just so much to see
But the best thing about New York City is you and me."
They did so many other great songs that night, but I will never forget hugging Al and watching them sing that one.
After one last trip to the merchandise table, we headed out.
Tickets to TMBG- $50
Merchandise- $100
Seeing TMBG sing your favorite song...priceless
