Indeed, an intermediary is more common the more mechanical a religion is (Catholics being the very notable exception). Generally speaking, the idea is abhorrent to protestants.

The first scripture made me think about the religions that are very comfortable with having a "go between"...and how its just not a protestant thing.

Yeah, I think that this scripture is fairly easy to take the wrong way. I also think that it is misquoted and abused a lot by those seeking to offer up an easy religion for the masses.

I'm sure that there are other versions of this scripture that would come off better...I don't like the mental image I get of knocking on your friends door until you wear them down and they throw you some bread. :) I understand some of the symbolism there of maybe thinking a door is shut to you, but not losing hope...but this doesn't do it for me so much.

Most often I think we do ask for snakes, but what I take from the story is that God is going to give you what is good for you, just like a parent tries to do with their children.

"Inattention in the Deity" is VERY thought provoking. It makes me think of our conversation about "prayer concerns" and how some churchgoers seem to think "if we get enough people to pray about this issue, then we might show up on God's radar and he will heal so and so..."

I stayed away from that part on purpose. It was specifically why I said that I was longing for my commentary books.

I immediately thought of all of the unison prayers and creeds when I read those lines.

I'll expound upon it in the next post.

What do you think it means by "meaningless repetition"?

I think any prayer you repeat a lot would become meaningless to the person who is praying.
I like the Lord's Prayer because I only ever say it in church, in unison with our church family, and that makes me think about what I am saying and what it means.

I did not know that such a thing as a "Hypermotard" existed...it sounds fitting for us.

I think it's funny that you failed to mention that your trip west through the snowstorms was because your 17 year old girlfriend was pregnant- the adventure we were most unprepared for, parenthood! :)

Love ya!

It's a really natural thought process for me. It never seems to occur to most people though. I'm not sure what that says for the whole concept. I've seen a couple churches succeed, and I've seen a couple fail, and I've seen a lot of them just founder.... Mostly for the reasons outlined here.
